Given the circumstances, I would probably tell her to run like fury and get help, not to intervene. And of course now there are cell phones.

As for your mother's comment, I had an aunt who frequently made similar comments whenever she heard of women who had suffered attacks. I still remember the quiet, studious, serious girl from my dormitory who was raped and murdered when she went to study at the university library one night. Even a girl-- or a boy -- who is flirting and behaving foolishly does not deserve to be attacked.Mary Witzlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06458299046574564155noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4655681444077745849.post-87849673213975555702007-11-25T12:33:00.000+00:002007-11-25T12:33:00.000+00:00Cold ? you should try it in a winter mountain s...Cold ? you should try it in a winter mountain stream !

The other side of what if is of course that you yourself might have become unpleasantly involved in the immediate moment.

Try a rational, objective approach too. I have heard animal sounds in the dark that sound very like a human scream. And only one twig breaking ?

Logic at least dictates that you could have done very little -- or should have done !

Brianbrianf@ozonline.com.auhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17365273528988879923noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4655681444077745849.post-18206812185439058552007-11-25T10:16:00.000+00:002007-11-25T10:16:00.000+00:00PS - it was a dashed cold night for outdoor passio...PS - it was a dashed cold night for outdoor passion!Sue Millardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09022262338933600748noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4655681444077745849.post-45435656690368013302007-11-25T10:13:00.000+00:002007-11-25T10:13:00.000+00:00My mother's comment is verbatim. I trusted her judgement because of my own inexperience, but as you say Brian, it still niggles - what if?Sue Millardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09022262338933600748noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4655681444077745849.post-25271716405234727232007-11-25T06:54:00.000+00:002007-11-25T06:54:00.000+00:00“She probably didn’t get anything she wasn’t askin...“She probably didn’t get anything she wasn’t asking for.”

This seems a rather callous comment, which contrasts with and that cry of fear

The fact that there was no follow up to the incident in papers etc., suggests that you may have come upon a moment of passion and no more, not necessarily fear. Would you have been able to differentiate at that age and with your then life experience?

Concern aboout the fragility of my new nylon tights has a significance in the narrative that also lessens the urgency of the situation.

I find that the way you use avoidance techniques and delays in narrative development through descriptive passages very clever.

In the end I would put it down to one of those puzzling incidents that one cannot exactly explain, but which niggle at the edge of mind and conscience with the perpetual query What if...

Makes a good tale though, whether you feel that you did right or not.

Brianbrianf@ozonline.com.auhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17365273528988879923noreply@blogger.com
